Carhart Rose Generator

Carhart roses are a fourfold rotationally symmetric grid design. Build one from scratch or explore pre-built roses.

Grid size

The dimension of the grid. This limits how big of a rose you can draw. Increasing the grid size also increases the solution space for finding a rose for the given seed, which may take longer. A medium grid is 32×32.

S M L XL

Length

The target path length of the rose. The longer the path, the more complex the solution can appear, but also the more potential branches in the solution space, which can take longer. The maximum path length for a 32×32 grid is 272.

Direction

The starting direction of the rose.

Animation

When enabled, the solution will be animated instead of statically presented.

When enabled, live search candidates will be animated as the solution search is being conducted. Dramatically increases the time to find a solution given each search candidate must be rendered as a frame in the animation.

Prune aggression

How aggressively invalid subtrees in the solution space are pruned.

LMH Low: TODO Curiosity

How candidate ordering balances compactness and exploration.

RLMH Random: Curiosity is turned off. Search candidates are chosen at random while computing a solution.

Constraints

Seed

The seed for the solution. Use lowercase letters and digits. Identical seeds with the same grid, direction, length, search limit, prune aggression, and curiosity produce identical solutions.

Custom grid size

Instead of picking a preset, specify the exact grid size. Maximum available grid size is 400×400.

Grids larger than XL (128×128) consume significantly more memory while searching for a solution.

Search limit

How many attempts the search algorithm is allowed to try before timing out. This is essentially the depth of the solution space. Increasing search limit increases the potential time the algorithm can run.

When enabled, while animating search, show invalid candidates as well as valid ones.

The delay in milliseconds between frames when animating the solution. Increasing the delay makes the animation easier to follow but slower to complete.

When enabled, all four lines share one color. When disabled, each line can be colored independently.
